Memorial for Flood Victims of 1965

The weekend of July 9 & 10 we had the Swenson and Woodruff family members book the Vacation Inn for their annual memorial and remembrance of the 7 family members killed in a flash flood on June 10th, 1965.

This is the information provided by statistics from the National Weather service for that tragedy.

"A husband...wife...their three children...and two nephews drowned in a flash flood in Sheep Creek Canyon in the Uinta Mountains. They were camped in Palisades Campground along the snowmelt-swollen waters of Sheep Creek. Heavy rains in the area turned the creek into a raging torrent."

For many years these families have stayed at the Vacation Inn and use this time for remembrance and also to celebrate their lives and to visit with other family members.

We appreciate these families for staying with us each year and look forward to seeing them again next season.

  1. MY NAME IS JIM PETTIT. I JUST MOVED TO MANILA IN DEC. OF 2010. I WAS 9 YEARS OLD WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I REMEMBER IT WELL BECAUSE WE WERE CAMPED AT THE SHEEP CREEK BOAT LAUNCH AREA IN A CAMPER, WE COULD NOT EVEN GO OUT AND FISH, THE RAIN WAS SO BAD. THE NEXT DAY WE HEARD THAT THE FAMILIY HAD BEEN KILLED WHEN THE FLOOD CAME RIPPING DOWN THE STREAM. GOD BE WITH THEM AND ALL THE SURVIVNG FAMILY MEMBERS.
